Weighing Chemical

  • Weighing must be done in a chemical fume hood, or
  • If a balance/scale cannot be used in the fume hood, pre-weigh a test tube or other covered vessel and add the compound inside the hood. Re-weigh to calculate the amount added, then add solvent to attain desired concentration
  • Perform all dilutions and aliquotting in a fume hood
  • Always use different sizes of spatulas and weighing boats to deal with all amounts of chemicals.
  • Any spill must be cleaned immediately!
  • Spill-neutralizing agent(s), if applicable, must be available and personnel must be knowledgeable as to their proper use.

    Safety Warning
  • Be careful with PCR machine lid. Gently close, it can be damaged
  • Check minimum volume of reaction compatible with this machine.
  • During handling of machine wear gloves.
  • Turn PCR machine off when you are done using.
  • Make sure PCR heater block is clean before you start a run. Check each tube receptacle before you start.
  • Please sign in on the log book.

Laminar Air flow

  • For laboratory experiments including without toxic, infectious, radioactive, or sensitizing materials.
  • Bacterial and Fungal culture only
Safety Warning
  • The cabinet must be on at least 5 minutes before starting biohazard work.
  • Never work with the cabinet UV light source illuminated.
  • The researcher should wear a closed-front lab coat (or surgical gown) and gloves.
  • Perform planning, start-up, wipe down, loading, work practice, purging, unloading, final wipe down and shutdown conscientiously in accordance with microbiological techniques.
  • Do not overload the containment area or block front, side, or rear air grills which will reduce or restrict air flow and compromise product or personal protection.
  • Do not use electric fans in the room when the biological safety cabinet is operating.
  • Decontaminate the cabinet with an appropriate disinfectant at the end of each operation.


Horizontal Electrophoresis

  • DNA and RNA analysis

Safety Warnings
  • Keep the apparatus away from sinks or other water sources.
  • Inspect the electrophoresis chamber for buffer leaks, caused by crazing or cracks in the plastic. Loss of buffer can lead to electrical arcing and fires.
  • If using ethidium bromide, have a hand-held UV light source available in the laboratory. Check working surfaces after each use.
  • Ultraviolet (UV) light boxes and handheld lamps used in visualizing ethidium bromide gels and pose potential exposures to UV radiation.
  • Consider using ethidium bromide substitutes such as SYBR Safe DNA Gel Stain or any other alternate
  • Decontaminate surfaces with ethanol.
  • Dispose of all materials in biohazardous waste container.
  • Do not run electrophoresis equipment while unattended.

Water Distillation unit

The water distiller purifies water by evaporation and condensation of the steam. It removes organic as well as inorganic material. However, it does not produce sterile water because spores may not be destroyed during the process and because the equipment does not guarantee sterile conditions of collection and storage.

    Safety Warning
  • Do not run water distillation unit while unattended.
  • Please insure there are no water leaks from the hose connection and the drain water flows freely
  • Before its operation, check the flow rate of the water supply is sufficient
  • Insure the safety cut-out should switch off the electricity and the water supply when water level is low in main reservoir.

Safety Warnings
  • The use of any hazardous materials in this equipment must be monitored by safety officer or some other suitably qualified individual.
  • BOD Incubator not suitable for drying, evaporating and burning-in of paints, enamels or similar materials whose solvents may produce an inflammable mixture with air.
  • Avoid usage of chemical which can results the formation of inflammable gas/air mixtures either within the equipment or in the immediate surroundings of the equipment.
  • Properly clean the dust inside the equipment to avoid short circuits or damage of electronics. 5. In order to ensure good ventilation within equipment, the space for placing loads should not exceed half volume of workroom.
  • Keep sufficient spacing of the load inside the equipment to ensure proper ventilation within the equipment. Avoid any load on the floor, against the side wall or underneath the ceiling of the equipment.
  • Improper loading may increase the time on reaching the set temperature.

    Safety Warning
  • Do not run water distillation unit while unattended.Maintain proper balance rotors during runs, especially when rotors are only partially loaded with tubes or plates. Make sure the tubes for experiments are specified for use with your centrifuge rotor. Use non-breakable materials such as PP, PE, and the like; avoid glass tubes.
  • Incorrect loading can reduce the lifetime of the rotor, and uncontrolled, heavy vibration can lead to permanently damage to machine/ an imbalance can lead to a rotor crash and even can injure you or someone else.
  • Balance your tubes according to their weight and opposing tubes should be the same type and filled with the same mass.
  • If the centrifuge begins to shake or wobble, stop it immediately. A little vibration is normal, but excessive amounts can mean danger.
